Source separation for recycling - moving towards a Circular Economy in Waste Management (15-16 April, Sofia)

In the second quarter of 2018, the European Union issued the “Circular Economy Package”, which has significant impact on both EU member states as well as on accession and neighbourhood policy countries. On the one hand, the amended waste legislation indicates new recycling targets in order to facilitate source separation and recycling (65% of the generated municipal solid waste shall be recycled in 2035). On the other hand, waste quantities sent to landfills should be decreased considerably in the next 15 years.

In its endeavours to implement projects according to EU standards, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) aims to facilitate the regulatory environment in its countries of operation. This policy seminar explores how to increase source separation for recycling by introducing different incentive systems.

More specific, selected speakers present and discuss solutions on different financing mechanisms (e.g. taxes, deposits, Extended Producer Responsibility schemes) and the related institutional, legal and contractual setups for source-separated recyclable collection systems in different countries.
