Interview with Dr. Ralitza Anguelava, Deputy Executive Director of BalBok Engineering

Ms. Anguelova, BalBok Engineering offers services for collection and treatment of hazardous waste. What wastes are defined as such according to our legislation?

According to the national legislation “hazardous waste” is waste which displays one or more hazardous properties and are dangerous for the people and the environment – for example toxic, flammable, corrosive, irritant, infectious, carcinogenic, etc. As such it is subject to the company’s activity. BalBok Engineering AD is a leading company in the field of environmental protection and waste management with 25-year of successful history. Our activity is associated with waste management, consultancy and training, as well as scientific research and project management in the area of environmental protection.

What are your solutions and which industries they are suitable for?

BalBok Engineering offers comprehensive services in waste management and environmental protection for industry, government and municipalities. We deal with recovery and disposal of industrial and hazardous waste, and also very successfully collect hazardous waste from the households.

How is the system for separate collection of household hazardous waste developing and is there a possibility for citizens to take advantage of it all year round?

The system for separate collection and disposal of hazardous waste from the households is a really successful one. We’ve been working together with Sofia Municipality for four years, and will continue to do so in the following two. Since 2014 we organize mobile collection points in many municipalities around the country. Sofia citizens benefit from the system all year round – they have the opportunity either to deliver their hazardous waste to chosen mobile collection point, according to an established schedule, or request a visit to a given address. The other municipalities, for the time being, prefer 2-3-day campaigns - two or three times a year.

What goals do you set with your participation in Save the Planet 2016 and what are you going to showcase?

The main focus of BalBok Engineering AD’s presentation at the exhibition in 2016 is related to the implementation of the project "Eco-innovative system for management of waste with unknown composition and origin in Bulgaria". The project is implemented for the period of 10 months and the outputs will be: central chemical laboratory in Stara Zagora, equipped with apparatus for qualitative and quantitative analysis of waste samples; a mobile laboratory equipped for sampling and on-site analysis; a developed manual for waste identification and a cloud-based information system.

We have the ambition to showcase and introduce the equipped Mobile laboratory at our company stand as well as the information system that will provide tracking of the activities with waste, as well as will ease the access of clients to our services.

Could you please, briefly introduce your recently launched project "Eco-innovative system for management of waste with unknown composition and origin in Bulgaria"? What are the expected results?

The Eco-innovative system for management of waste with unknown composition and origin in Bulgaria covers the introduction of technologies and processes to manage pollution from historical stored, poorly managed, abandoned or illegally dumped waste, which can also be dangerous.

Development and implementation of the system ensures more sustainable solutions, providing a new service for waste management of unknown composition and origin in the country and strengthening the market position and competitiveness of BalBok Engineering AD.

Project "Eco-innovative system for management of waste with unknown composition and origin in Bulgaria" is supported by a grant from Norway through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2009-2014, in the frame of Programme Area BG 10 – Green Industry Innovation. Programme Operator is the state agency "Innovation Norway" to the Norwegian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Fisheries. The motto of the programme is "Good for business - good for the environment."
