A small UK city hired US Covanta to generate energy from waste ഀ

ഀ
The Royal Borough of Windsor and ഀ
Maidenhead has awarded a long term contract to treat all residual and ഀ
organic waste generated in the borough to Covanta Energy. The task of ഀ
the preferred bidder will be to turn approximately 30,000 tonnes of ഀ
non-recyclable municipal waste, which would otherwise have ended up in ഀ
landfill into a fuel to generate "largely renewable" electricity. ഀ
Covanta has a contract, according to which 15,000 tonnes of food and ഀ
garden waste collected in the borough each year will be treated by its ഀ
organic waste partner, Agrivert Energy and fertiliser will be produced ഀ
from the waste. The company said that the award of this contract is partഀ
of its long-term plan to develop a number of waste to energy facilitiesഀ
across the UK. According to the local cabinet the waste management ഀ
solution will help drive up recycling rates, provide value for money forഀ
population and will generate significant levels of sustainable energy, ഀ
by diverting waste away from landfill and using it as a fuel to generateഀ
renewable electricity. The plan is in four years' time to zero landfillഀ
tax when waste that can't be recycled is used to generate energy. ഀ
ഀ
The experience of the UK will be presented during the international Eco Forum Save the Planet (Waste Management & Recycling), which will take place in Sofia, March 28-30. The parallel South-East European Business Event focuses on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources and is organized by Via Expo. ഀ

ESWET – the European Suppliers of Waste to Energy Technologyഀ
– will be hosting a presentation session on 29.03.2012, 11:30, ഀ
providing everything from background and technical explanations to EU ഀ
legislative update and case studies on the best solution for ഀ
unrecyclable waste. Our experience as suppliers of grate-firing waste ഀ
combustion has already helped many EU Member States to virtually stop ഀ
landfilling thanks to energy recovery from unrecyclable waste. The EU ഀ
Directives are also incentivising the rest of EU Member States to ഀ
implement the best waste management practices, focusing first on waste ഀ
prevention, reuse and recycling, to then use Waste-to-Energy as the ഀ
proven solution for unrecyclable waste. This approach also brings the ഀ
most benefits in terms of secure and partly renewable supply of energy ഀ
while fighting Climate Change. ഀ
ഀ
This session is a unique opportunity to meet specialists inഀ
the field of Waste-to-Energy and ask them all you always wanted to knowഀ
about the technology. ഀ

ACR+ is an international network of cities and regions who share ഀ
the common aim of promoting sustainable consumption of resources and ഀ
management of waste through prevention at source, reuse and recycling. ഀ
Its key projects for 2012: ഀ
ഀ
- Waste prevention: a specific ACR+ training module for the ഀ
elaboration and implementation of local waste prevention programs, the ഀ
ACR+ data base of good practices, a guide of good practices, and the ഀ
launch of the decision-making/monitoring tools for waste prevention.
ഀ
- Recycling and resource recovery: ACR+ will analyze the progress madeഀ
towards a European Recycling Society and identify the underlying good ഀ
practices through the European Observatory of Municipal Waste Recycling ഀ
Performances.
ഀ
- Economic Instruments: ACR+ will work on the use of economic ഀ
instruments such as taxes, EPR schemes, PAYT systems, deposit schemes, ഀ
etc. Focus will be made on the concept of Extended Producer ഀ
Responsibility (EPR), with the creation of a European EPR Club.
ഀ
- Euro-Mediterranean network for waste management (ACR+ MED): ACR+ is ഀ
working on the development of a network with cities and regions from theഀ
south and east of the Mediterranean area, with the aims of building ഀ
capacities with regard to waste management and sustainable lifestyles ഀ
and exchanging information and expertise.
